How we choose and assess apps
Our standards for evidence, recommendations, corrections, updates, affiliate links, and sponsorship.
Last updated October 23, 2026.
Choose a problem before a product
We select apps around a practical job: find something faster, arrange a working space, retain useful information, or reduce a repeated task. We consider built-in and free alternatives alongside paid products. An affiliate program is not a requirement for inclusion.
Research and hands-on testing are different
Researched overview means we read official documentation and other identified sources, compare stated features and limitations, and explain the decision. It does not establish reliability, speed, security, or day-to-day usability from our own app use. Our current articles use this label; each page shows its own evidence context.
Hands-on requires actual recorded app and macOS versions, hardware, dates, tasks, and observations. Website testing in a Linux VM is not Mac app testing. We do not invent benchmarks, screenshots, app use, ratings, or endorsements.
Explain the trade-offs
Each assessment names an audience, a concrete benefit, a limitation, and reasonable alternatives. We avoid star ratings when we lack a defensible measurement method. Privacy-related settings are not security guarantees; readers should check their workplace rules and threat model.
Keep details useful
Product records retain source links and verification dates. We prefer linking to current pricing over presenting a number that could quickly change. Compatibility and plans can change, so verify them with the publisher before installing or paying.
A substantive update changes the recommendation, compatibility, workflow, or evidence and receives an update date. Typo fixes do not reset an article’s original publication date. Unpublished drafts and future-dated articles are excluded from public output.
Corrections
Material factual corrections should identify what changed and why in the article. Sources take precedence over marketing shorthand. Our contact page shows whether an editorial contact route is currently available.
Money and editorial decisions
No affiliate links or sponsored placements are present in this launch collection. If compensated links are supplied later, they will be labelled near the recommendation and marked appropriately for search engines. Sponsorship must be clearly labelled and kept separate from the editorial assessment. It must not purchase a favorable verdict.
See the affiliate disclosure for the current link policy.
